Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters
New research reveals that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
