The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.
Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
