Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.

Police say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.

The fluid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they stated.

Law enforcement then found many other smeared cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement report early analysis show the substance was most likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the incident," they stated.

Local authorities stated they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.

A senior representative stated the vandalism made him without words and required to be solved quickly.

"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
